Q & A with KJ

Today's member spotlight features Kaity Jo Bryll; known at Legitimus as "KJ".

KJ swam for her college swim team, and is a strong and easy to coach athlete.

Her competitive spirit, and easy going attitude fit in wonderful with the laid back environment at Legitimus, and we are so happy to have her around!!

Q: How long have you been Crossfitting?

A: I started in July of 2012, and I have come a long way since then! I am stronger both mentally and physically, and love the fact that I am in an actual box, with a real Coach to push me... because I used to CrossFit on my own.

Q: Where did you do that?

A: I did interval training on my own at a local gym beginning way back in 2003. I eventually started taking WODs off the CrossFit main site, but it wasn't working out as well as I hoped. There was limited space, and equipment, plus people looked at me funny.

Q: Where do you work?

A: I currently work in Sales / Marketing at Cigna in Bloomfield, I've been there for five years.

Q: Do you have a favorite wod or movement??

A: I love obstacle WODs! My all time favorite is one from last summer, when we had to put a kettle bell, atlas stone, and bumper into a wheel barrel and run it up and down the parking lot!

Q: What do you like most about CrossFit?

A: I get bored easily, so I love that CrossFit is always changing, it keeps me interested and excited!

Q: Anything you don't like??

A: I honestly can't say I hate any particular movement. Don't get me wrong, there are times where I'm swearing at myself during a WOD, but that's the beauty of it. CrossFit pushes you to WANT to be better.

Q: What do you do when you're not CrossFitting?

A: I love outdoor events! This summer I'm looking forward to the 5k Color Run in Hartford, The Winding Trails triathlon series in Farmington, and The 5k Rugged Maniac obstacle course. Come join me!

Member Spotlight: Ashley Kelsey

Self proclaimed gym rat, Ashley Kelsey, started CrossFitting two months ago when she found herself bored with her repetitive cardio workouts.

An aspiring fitness model, Ashley had never done any Olympic lifting in the past, but has already added some serious weight to her numbers, and is only getting stronger.

When asked about the difference between working out at a globo gym versus a CrossFit box, Ashley can't say enough good things:

"I love that we do something different everyday, and I love that I have to answer to a Coach. It's like having a personal trainer, but in a class setting where everyone supports each other. It definitely beats putting on my headphones and working out alone!"

Like other new members, Ashley says she felt accepted and included in the Legitimus community almost immediately.

"Everyone is so friendly. I love that the workouts are scalable to fit different fitness levels, so someone who isn't very athletic can workout side by side next to someone who is super strong. Everyone supports each other, it's awesome."

Ashley tries to WOD five days a week, is currently loving raw foods, and credits her diet as the most important part of her fitness routine.

If you think you might have seen Ashley somewhere outside the box, it's because you probably have.

When she isn't working out, Ashley is a TV personality, who got her start on MTV's The Real World Back To San Diego, and MTV's The Challenge, Battle of the Seasons.

On "The Challenge", Ashley, who describes herself as non-competitive, did incredible things to test her mental and physical toughness; like being suspended 40 feet above the water with no harness!!!!

For someone who never played sports and doesn't care for competition, Ashley more than held her own on "The Challenge," and even helped her team come in First Place!!

Ashley is currently pursuing a career in broadcasting or hosting, and was most recently seen on NBC Sports, "The Crossover."

If you see Ashley around the box, be sure to say, "Hi!" and welcome her to the Legitimus family!

Whether your child is trying to maintain or gain strength in the off season from their sport, work on their physical fitness or just stay busy... this is the perfect program for all fitness abilities!

Every "workout" can be scaled and modified to suit your child's comfort level, whether they are a seasoned athlete, or have never been in a Gym before.

Sessions will begin on June 24, July 15, and August 5.

Member Spotlight: Kenny Weinstock

Kenny Weinstock has been a Legitimus member for just four short weeks, but it’s safe to say he has already drank the Kool-Aid.

Kenny is a regular at the 6:30 pm class and according to Jen, he has been at just about every single class since he took a free Saturday class last month.

Jen also says that Kenny was a natural addition to our crazy group with his quirky humor and determination in WODs.

Like the rest of us, Kenny took fitness classes in the past and saw little to no results.

Fast forward to now, four weeks into his CrossFit career, and he already notices a difference in his mind and body, thanks to the warm and welcoming CFL community.

He is a big fan of super quick and efficient work outs that leave him gasping for breath and covered in sweat. He is not a fan of sit ups and push-ups!

Kenny is an attorney in Hartford with a crazy schedule, so the set class times at Legitimus really work for his lifestyle and more or less give him no reason NOT to attend a class and get his butt kicked.

His long term CrossFit goals include getting a pull up, losing 15 pounds, and getting his wife and 4 kids into the Gym with him.

Be sure to say Hi if you see Kenny, and welcome him to the Legitimus family!

FAQ Legitimus Style

What is CrossFit? I hear it’s intense.

CrossFit is as intense as you want it to be. It is a strength and conditioning program that can be scaled to all fitness levels and backgrounds. Even if you haven’t worked out in twenty years, or EVER, CrossFit is for you.

At Legitimus, our oldest member is 70, and our youngest is 10. Everyone takes part in every workout, and scales or modifies movements to their ability.

Our members come in all shapes and sizes, and have fitness abilities all across the board. It is not uncommon for everyone in a class to be doing something different, according to their capability.

Do I have to be in shape to start?

No, of course not! You join a gym to get in shape… you don’t join a gym before you join a gym! That is just confusing.

What can I expect?

All CrossFit boxes (box = gym) program their workouts a little differently. Generally, you can expect to get your butt kicked.

There will be squats, and lots of them. You’ll also see push ups, jump roping, lunges, sit ups, wall ball… basically anything you can think of that involves moving your body in a functional way, is what you’ll find in a CrossFit gym.

Expect to get sweaty... no matter what you think you can or can't do, CrossFit will challenge you to do more.

Expect Olympic Weight Lifting....

And to make new friends...

At Legitimus, our head Coach is creative and inventive.

We never know what she will come up with next!

Every day is different, our work outs are never announced, or posted on line… so you won't know what you’re doing until you walk in the door! You will be challenged every day.

What’s with the kilts?

Sport kilts are a staple at Legitimus. They’ve been around since the day we opened our doors, and while we could explain it to you… take a look at a picture like this and then tell us… does it matter??

Why is it so expensive!?

You’re right, CrossFit is expensive, and if you are used to paying $10 a month, it may be a shock to you at first. But, let’s remember that you get what you pay for.

At Legitimus, we offer a lot of different price plans. There are family plans, student plans, and right now we have an amazing Living Social deal going on... $50 for an unlimited month!

You can be sure that you are spending money not only for a gym membership, but for a complete lifestyle change.

You are joining a community, where nearly every member will know your name, and want to see you succeed.

We offer babysitting at least three times a week, and our Coaching is as close to one on one as you can get, without having a personal trainer.

What we do is very different than a "Buy it and forget it," membership that you might get at another gym. If you stop showing up, you can expect a Coach to hunt you down and find out why!!

But is it for me?

Try it out and see! Legitimus offers free classes every Saturday at 9 am.

Is every member jacked? I am a woman and don’t want to get big muscles.

It is a common misconception that if a female lifts weights she will automatically be a beast and not be able to fit through a doorway. It is a nasty, silly rumor that just isn’t true.

We encourage you, and CHALLENGE you to find ONE of our female members that looks really jacked, and not toned and sculpted.

Unless you plan on devoting your life to the weights, it just isn’t realistic.

I’m embarrassed by my lack of fitness.

We have all been there, and you can be sure that at Legitimus you will find only friendly, welcoming faces, that want to see you succeed. It sounds like a gimmick, but it’s not. Try a Saturday class and see for yourself!

Member Spotlight: T.J. Oneglia

T.J. Oneglia is pretty humble about his fitness ability.

A Legitimus member for one year, T.J.; who says he loves box jumps, and Olympic lifting, is also one of the fastest people in the gym, according to Coach Brian.

Coach Jen says that T.J.... "makes the Litchfield Road Race look like a walk in the park,"... so we know he is pretty damn fast.

T.J. is also the first person in the history of CrossFit to say that he truly really enjoys wall ball...but don't worry, he hates wall walks just like the rest of us.

T.J. is the type of athlete who would rather go light and focus on correct form than go heavy and risk injury.

He is a 5:30 am regular, and hopes to keep improving his fitness, stay healthy, and eventually get a muscle up!

He and his wife Mary, who also WODs at Legitimus sometimes, recently moved from Litchfield to Avon with their two children.

If you see T.J. at the gym, please ask him to slow down... and stop making the rest of us look bad!
